Domestic violence is a crime
National Day to Combat Domestic Violence
Every year the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Women mentions October 1 as a National day against domestic violence. On the 1st October 2010 20-year-old Zaruhi Petrosyan was dead as a result of her husband’s violent beating. It was not the only case in Armenia but it crucially shocked the society with its cruelty. As a result the NGO’s which were concerned about the domestic violence issues were joined and created the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Women which demanded fair trial, prevention of domestic violence cases and the regulation of the legislative field.
Each year there are registered more and more domestic violence cases in Armenia. There were 1204 cases of violence against women, 52 of which were directed to their sexual inviolability and sexual freedom. According to the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Women during their period at least 5 women were killed by their husband or partner. Moreover, the number of phone calls directed to the member organizations has doubled reaching 4500.
